True Education Readers were Bible textbooks written by eminent teaches of the denomination. Among the foremost writers as well as the Educational Superintendent of the General Conference was Sarah Peck.
Sarah Peck was an educational pioneer and author of various true education and other textbooks, and a literary assistant to Ellen G. White.
Sarah was born in Menomonie, Wisconsin, on April 5, 1868, to Adventist parents William E. Peck (1829-1898) and Mary J. Peck (1833-1913).1 She was the fifth of seven children.
She attended Battle Creek College and graduated from the English course in 1888.
She joined others in starting a denominational high school in November 1888 in a church basement in Minneapolis, MN. From there she went to South Africa where she helped found Claremont Union College near Cape Town.
Ellen White who was in Australia began asking for Sarah to join her at Avondale, where she eventually came in 1898. For the next four years, Sarah taught classes at the college, helped organize the school, edited materials for Ellen White, and created the filing system for Ellen White’s manuscripts that would be used by her staff during her final years and then by the White Estate.
She returned to American with Ellen White and joined her at Elmshaven in 1990. She also helped found Foothills Academy nearby.
From there she went to Union College in Nebraska (1908-1914) where she led the education department. Later she worked as the educational superintendent of the California Conference (1914 to 1917) and after that the same role for the world church.
She wrote twenty books.
She retired at the age of 55 and returned to Angwin, California, because she lacked certification from an accredited school.
